The Savage Model 99 became one of the most popular deer rifles in America, in part because of the excellent .250-3000 and .300 Savage cartridges that it introduced. Barrel lengths of 20, 26 or 30 inches were offered, either in round or half octagon/half round design and chambered only in .303 Savage. [3][8] By the end of production, Savage had sold the 99 family in 58 different models and special grade configurations.[8]. The old Redfield sight proved responsive, and the rifle passed my pie-plate accuracy test for short-range hunting, easily producing 2-inch groups. Introduced in 1894, the .303 is a rimmed cartridge using a true-American, .308-inch bullet, rather than the British .303s .311-inch bullet diameter.
